Our History

The United Churches in the Chipman area can trace their history back to 1841. The first Presbyterian ministers came from Northern Ireland. By 1844 a church had been built at Red Bank on the site of the present United Church Cemetery. The church at Gaspereau Forks was built in 1896. Three years later the current United Church in Chipman was built and dedicated on the first Sunday in October, 1899. At one time there were four additional preaching points- at Red Bank, Coal Creek, Salmon Creek and Salmon River.
However, by the 1960’s there were regular services of worship at Gaspereau Forks and Chipman only.

Over the years these two congregations have grown closer together. People from Chipman are regular attendants at the services at Gaspereau Forks and folks from there come to morning worship in Chipman especially on the Sundays when there is no evening service in Gaspereau. At present at Chipman the worship is traditional while in Gaspereau Forks the worship is more contemporary. Our past minister, Reverend Jim Postlethwaite introduced Taizé Services alternating with Gospel SingSpirational Services at the Forks.

Our present minister, Reverend Kathi Zwicker has sought to enrich those two worship experiences, as well as introducing Celtic Services. During the past few years both congregations have carried out major projects. For the Chipman congregation it was an expansion of the church parking lot. The congregation in Gaspereau Forks have carried out extensive repairs and renovations to their church building. The project is ongoing with plans for building a labyrinth beside the Forks church.

As the two congregations of the Chipman-Gaspereau Pastoral Charge face the future, they go forward believing that God has a plan for us and a mission for us to pursue.
